Shona Headrest
DESCRIPTION
This elegant and sculptural headrest is part of an incredibly special collection of pieces which took 8 years to curate and is an incredibly rare find. For the Shona people of Zimbabwe, headrests are an ancient part of their culture and nowadays few own them, or have even seen one.
Shona headrests have a long history of being a prestige ornament associated with political and religious leadership. They are hand-carved from indigenous wood and often have a shell disk design, also known as Ndoro, which is believed to be connected to spirit mediums. The headrest is thought to hold spiritual powers and invoke dreams.
The wood has taken on a beautiful patina and wear over use and time with natural imperfections. Style as a sculptural decorative piece anywhere in the home.
