Dan Mask 09
Hand-carved from indigenous wood, Dan masks come from the Dan people of Liberia and the Ivory Coast. The Dan farmers of northeastern Liberia and western Ivory Coast are known for two types of masks. The Deangle mask has slit eyes with a downwards gaze and represents a female spirit and the other the Tangagle mask which represents the male spirit, with large round eyes. Their masks are sacred objects used for protection and as a channel for communication with the spirit world.
