Cowrie Shell Necklace

Cowrie shells are iconic tribal shell necklaces. The necklaces were traditionally used as a a form of shell currency by the Tolai people of Papua New Guinea. The currency would be used from watering for everyday goods, to bridal dowries, purchasing land during initiation or mourning ceremonies. 

Each necklace has been handmade in Indonesia, due to this natural process no two pieces will be identical and the shells may have natural variations in colour. Stand is included. Please note stands may have minor imperfections.
